Flow Visualisation Scale Model

This Plexiglas scale model enables qualitative study of several types of flow. It can be used on an overhead projector in a lecture room or by students themselves in a practical work session.

The scale model is connected to a water circuit by quick-connect fittings and flexible hoses. Potassium permanganate can be injected at several points.

Straight flow: shows the laminar-to-turbulent transition as a function of flow rate, and velocity profiles. Sudden change of cross-section: using the supplied accessories, this configuration (usable in both directions) visualises a sudden contraction or sudden expansion, showing flow contraction and dead zones. Venturi: using the supplied accessories, this configuration shows in laminar flow the clean, distinct streamlines that round and contract. Orifice plates: using the supplied accessories, one can visualise streamlines rounding and contracting at the restriction, then reattaching to the wall at a distance that depends on flow rate (comparison with Venturi). Profile in a flow: different profiles (aerofoil, cylinder, etc.) can be placed in the flow. During operation, the angle of incidence can be varied to show streamline separation.
